News bulletin: Design registered for a cheap 250W barrel turbine for developing countries 31 July 2010

Over the past year or two, we've been getting lots of enquiries from developing countries looking for a cheap wind turbine.

And that's exactly what we've been working on! The design for this 250W VAWT is registered, and the patent is pending.

Like all our turbines, the 250W barrel turbine doesn't need any external power sources.

It's also ideal for heating water, security lighting, street lighting and emergency lighting.

Above: The design of this 250W barrel turbine has been registered - it's ideal for use in developing countries as a cost-effective, independent power source.

Here's a short video clip of the 250W barrel turbine in action. (9 seconds; 1.85MB; WMV format.)

This was filmed in approximately 6 knots of wind.

As this design uses recycled plastic barrels, it's extremely environmentally friendly.

We're currently looking for sources of used plastic barrels: if you know of any companies who are looking to dispose of these, please do contact us.

News bulletin: Field testing of Silent Wind Turbine yields performance data May 2009

The field testing programme at SEEDA’s site at Chatham Maritime has allowed for significant progress to be made in the Silent Wind Turbine’s development.

Firstly, Luethi Enterprises were able to test the old blade shape and new blade shape side-by-side. This revealed that the new blade shape provides significantly more power with an even lower start-up speed.

This movie clip shows just how much more efficient the new blades are compared to the previous design. The wind speed was very low when we took this movie: just 1.7 m/s! An electrical current was being generated, even at that low speed.

(The movie clip is 19 seconds; 1.2MB, WMV format.)

Secondly, we were able to undertake field testing on the curved blades and their configuration. Previous wind tunnel tests were inconclusive, as wind tunnels produce wind from a constant direction. In the real world, the wind is constantly oscillating and this affects the turbine’s performance. Being able to test these important factors in the field allowed us to refine the curves of the blade, and we also ascertained that a five-blade configuration provides more torque, and therefore more power output than three blades.

As a result of these findings, a new prototype 500W DC micro wind turbine prototype was built and then spent a number of months undergoing field testing at the SEEDA site at Chatham Maritime.

This yielded the following results:

  • Startup Wind Speed: 3.5m/s = 8.1mph or 13km/h or 7 Knots

  • 4.2m/s (10mph) = 50 rpm producing 10VDC =130W

  • 8.3m/s (19mph) = 100 rpm producing 20V DC = 260W

  • 13.1m/s (30mph) = 150 rpm producing 28V DC = 360W

  • 18.5m/s (42mph) = 200 rpm producing 36V DC = 470W

  • 22 m/s to 35 m/s = (50 mph to 80 mph) producing 38V = 500W

Size of this model: 900mm wide; 1000mm tall

Weight (Including 1000mm mast): 65kg

News bulletin: Wind-powered water pump model built March 2009

Luethi Enterprises Ltd has been receiving numerous requests from around the world for a wind-powered water pump that's reliable and cost-effective.

A basic model has been built, revealing that the Silent Wind Turbine by Luethi Enterprises is an ideal solution. Such a pump would benefit drought-ridden countries as well as fisheries and aquatic centres needing to aerate their ponds.

To bring this to market, the wind turbine project requires funding to finalise the R&D programme. To receive an obligation-free information pack via email, please email us.

A brief timeline and history of the silent wind turbine can be read here.
