Installing your wind turbine

Choosing the right place to site your wind turbine

Your wind turbine needs a clear airflow in order to perform well.

That means you should NOT install a wind turbine:

  • Close to a pitched roof.

  • On a pitched roof of a domestic dwelling.

  • On the front of a roof facing into the main wind direction (to avoid the upwind created by the wall of the building).

  • Near tall trees (for at least 50 metres in any direction).

Why is this? Large buildings and tall trees in close proximity will create a "dirty" wind that reduced the efficiency of wind turbines.

On large, tall buildings a 5 metre mast is recommended so that your turbine can reach into a clear airflow.

If in doubt, please order a wind survey of your site. Wind Maps are available from the UK Met Office, the British Wind Turbine Association, and other service providers.

How to install your wind turbine

Permanent installation

The most secure way to install your wind turbine is to purchase a bespoke or recommended mast, and to fix this into a concrete base.

For a 500W to 1kW wind turbine we recommend a concrete base of 1m by 1m wide, and 1.5m deep, with the steel rods provided by the mast supplier set into this base.

For ease of installation and maintenance we recommend either a tilting or telescopic mast.

For roof installations, consult your Architect and Builder first to see if this is even possible. Also be sure to contact your Building Insurer.

Usually a permanently-installed wind turbine will need planning permission or other consents; this is your responsibility as the customer. So be sure to contact your local council or other authority first of all.

Temporary installation

Our small 250W turbines may be installed as temporary fixtures, either on bespoke masts, scaffolding towers, tripods, fixed to a topped tree, or on a trailer.

Generally such installations do not require planning permission, however it is your responsibility as the customer to check this; and to make sure that such installations are safe.

Keeping your neighbours happy

As a gesture of goodwill, please inform your neighbours about your plans. In the UK there are only two ways for them to object to your wind turbine:

1. If it is unsafe and can fall on their property; or

2. If your wind turbine makes a noise. But as the proud owner of a Silent Wind Turbine, this will not affect you in any way. You and your neighbours can sleep in silence, even when the wind turbine is working.
